It is a useful book, however I would recommend to get some additional training material, the practice exams available in the website are sometimes buggy, but useful though.There are some useful exam simulators available online, not that expensive, around $10 each, just use Google and you will find them.

I am loving this book. I had some prior knowledge of Java and this book is making a lot more concepts clear that weren't that clear before. Thank you so much to the author. I plan to finish the book as soon as I can to appear for my OCA first and then my OCP exam.

Excellent book. Passed OCA with 88% of score reading OCA book for just a month(I have less than half year of experience with Java and not majoring in CS)

As stated by other reviewers, it is one of the only books available for studying for the Java OCP - I haven't taken the exam yet, so I can't attest to whether or not it does a good job. My main issue is that book that I received had a humongous mistake in it. It was missing pages 143-191. These pages were replaced with some text from a Windows Server study guide. This to me seems like a publishing issue. Sadly, I didn't get to that portion of the book until after the 30 day deadline for returns, so I can't return the book and had to buy a new copy. My new copy arrived and has those pages correctly printed as far as I know. I would just caution that anyone who buys these books ensures the pages are what they should be...sounds very annoying, but worth flipping through the pages to save yourself $30-$50 to buy a new copy.

OCA/OCP is more about deep knowledge of Java than real world experience. The exam questions are full of "traps" and can be annoying even for experienced programmers. These books are scrolling through Java foundations while focusing on the exam itself and its posibilities. Highly recommended.

I studied 4 days each for the exams and these two books are the only materials I used for preparation besides Java Docs API and my 17 years' working knowledge on Java and I got 91% on OCA and 86% on OCP.These two books cover 95% of the exam contents, there is 5% missing though.I only used these books so I can't compare other books for you.

Preparing for the OCA/OCP exams with this books gets you to the level of passing with high score! The books clearly explain all the concepts and the exams at the end of the chapters allow you to see where you need to improve, thus helping you consolidate your knowledge.

Mischa Schwartz joined the faculty of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University in 1974 and is now Charles Batchelor Professor Emeritus. He is the author and co-author of nine books, including best-selling books on communication systems and computer networks. His current research focuses on wireless networks. He is a Fellow and former Director of the IEEE, past President of the IEEE Communications Society, and past Chairman of the IEEE Group on Information Theory. About the Author
Bill Benners spent twenty years writing and producing programs, editorials, and commercials for radio while acting and directing in community theater. He wrote the outdoor drama Blackbeard's Final Conquest in the 1980s followed by two plays produced on the indoor stage in the early 1990s.
