About the Author
Roger R. Hock, PhD, is a professor of psychology and human sexuality at Mendocino College in northern California. He received his MA in Psychology from San Diego State University and his PhD in Psychology from the University of California at San Diego. He is also the author of Forty Studies that Changed Psychology: Explorations into the History of Psychological Research (Pearson, 2012) and coauthor (with Meg Kennedy Dugan) of It’s My Life Now: Starting over after an Abusive Relationship or Domestic Violence (Routledge, 2006), and (with Amy Marin) Psychology, a digital introductory psychology textbook from Pearson Education.

Dr. Hock has been teaching psychology and human sexuality for over twenty-five years. Human Sexuality is his favorite class to teach and is consistently one of the most popular among students. He believes that Human Sexuality is an essential course for college students because the topics covered are fundamental to our lives and our identities as humans. He asserts that the Human Sexuality course should be a requirement for all undergraduate college and university students. Why? Because the material in this course touches everyone, in countless ways, throughout their lives. I love short books that are meaningful. This book I read in a couple hours and the message is so peaceful and life giving.Wabi Sabi is a term that comes from two Japanese words mashed together and it is rarely defined, indeed it kind of avoids being defined. The author says Japanese people know the feeling but not the definition. This was indeed my experience in Tokyo as I asked my friend to guide me to things that connected with Wabi Sabi culture.There are black and white photos on almost every other page of this book, of various things that convey the Wabi Sabi idea. The book spends a few pages on conveying the definition or more accurately, the feeling of Wabi Sabi, it gives a bit of history, then outlines the "Wabi Sabi Universe" which includes the following headings:Metaphysical BasisSpiritual ValuesState of mindMoral PreceptsMaterial QualitiesWabi Sabi is the opposite of the Rat Race. It reminds me of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount or the struggle against nature. It values simplicity and perhaps above all the process of nature. Thoreau and Emerson would approve.Some quotes:"Get rid of all that is unnecessary""Wabi sabi tells us to stop our preoccupation with success--wealth, status, power, and luxury--and enjoy the unencumbered life.""Things wabi sabi have no need for the reassurance of status or the validation of market culture."

It's amazing how you can ignore an entire abstract for decades until some one tells you how to name it. I see wabi-sabi everywhere now—in places I previously found nothing. What a gift.

A "must-read" for artists and writers interested in Japanese aesthetics. I studied the tea ceremony for a number of years in Japan, and never have I seen as good an explanation of "wabi-sabi" as this one.

This book is a great creative and spiritual guidance. Every line is a jewel. Modern as never since we are trying to rediscover balance and simplicity. I highly recommend it for reading and sharing. Thanks for a fast delivery and a very good condition as was promised.

As a visual artist with a little knowledge on the wabi-sabi concept, I was excited when I found this book. I'm not sure of the writer's background, but if the writer does not have Japanese heritage than the text is a little presumptuous of an outsider to try to tackle. The visuals that were chosen to accompany the text were not only in black and white, something to be overlooked if done conceptually well, but were low contrast and at times unintelligible. If this is a book written by an author with Japanese heritage, as seems most logical due to the nature of the concept, than I would have to say it misses the mark of bridging the cultural understanding gap. The text is well laid-out with carefully chosen typographic choices and the paper feels nice in your hands. But this will not be a book I return to read again. Would not recommend.

I ordered 2 of these books. One for me and one to share with my Wabi Sabi Sister. We've enjoyed our books so much and learned how to appreciate our lives so much more. We live in the moment now and don't get upset if we don't have a perfect day. This is a great book!

A moving book, very serious. Gives one an understanding of Wabi-Sabi, which is difficult to describe, let alone grasp on a deep level. I found this in a book store so was able to read it before buying a copy for a friend. The design of the book, its pages and the layout of the copy, is like poetry. It's quite beautiful. A great gift for that friend who likes to drag home from the beach, pieces of wet, sandy wood or who picks up old, rusty things found in abandoned, over-grown lots... you know the type, they find beauty in unusual, dark-ish, imperfect things.

As the title says, this is a book for artists poets philosophers and designers. The very beginning made me double over in laughter, but what follows is as profound as it is silly. A celebration of the imperfect, the incomplete and the unworthy. It is said that God does not love us for our perfections but for our occlusions. Reading this book I would say that those who practice Wabi Sabi know exactly what that means. And at first I thought the book would be about that green mustard they serve with sushi. It's much more profound than that, and was just what I needed to hit the spot.
